C03: Advances in channel coding for reliable communications

Tuesday, August 19  08:00-09:00,  Room #20

Session Chairs: Joseph Boutros, Alberto Tarable

This session deals with the latest achievements in channel coding. In particular, two are the topics that will be discussed in the talks. The first is polar codes, which have been discovered by E. Arikan and are the only code family which provably achieve the capacity of binary-input symmetric channels. The second is spatially-coupled codes, which bridge the gap between maximum-likelihood decoding and message passing. For this second subject, two talks are scheduled, one concentrating more on theoretical properties, the other focusing more on applications.
