The URSI Board of Officers discussed the nominations and have whole
heartedly agreed with the Awards Panel,
- to award the Balthasar Van der Pol Gold Medal to Prof. Ismo Veikko Ilmari Lindell (Finland) with the
citation : "For the development of new methods and solutions in
electromagnetic field theory and for exceptional didactic skills".
- to award the John Howard Dellinger Gold Medal to Prof.
JÆrgen Bach Andersen (Denmark) with the citation: "For
significant contributions to the theory of antenna characteristics and
scattering, wave propagation over inhomogeneous areas in mobile
communication, and interaction between electromagnetic fields and biological
tissue".
- to award the first Booker Gold Medal to Prof.
Yahya Rahmat-Samii (USA) with the citation :"For
fundamental contributions to reflector antenna design and practice,
near-field measurements and diagnostic techniques, handheld antennas and
human interactions, genetic algorithms in electromagnetics, and the spectral
theory of diffraction".
- to award the Issac Koga Gold Medal to Prof.
Susan C. Hagness (USA), with the citation "For
contributions to the development of enhanced finite-difference time-domain
methods in computational electromagnetics, and ultrawideband microwave
imaging techniques for early breast cancer detection".
The Council of the Royal Society of London agreed with the nominations
and recommendations of the Awards Panel and URSI Board and decided
to award the Appleton Prize to Dr.
Didier Massonnet (France), with the citation : "For
his outstanding work on radar imaging and satellite radar interferometry, a
technique combining high frequencies, propagation and digital signal
processing".
